Chizuko Sato – TUFS

African studies, Migration and refugee studies

Chizuko Sato

Chizuko Sato specialises in African studies and International Relations, with research into poverty issues, migration and refugees, social development and state-society relations. In this course, she will provide lectures and seminars aiming to develop the ability to explore and analyse various issues that threaten the sustainability of states and societies in the Global South, using qualitative research methods. This approach emphasises understanding the historical experiences and political and economic context of the countries under study. Poverty issues in the Global South are linked to societies in the Global North through international population movements and development aids. Hence, students are also encouraged to learn about initiatives at the level of the international community and develop a perspective to evaluate them.
