Q.   誰が応募できますか？  Who can apply to the program?

  • JDPSRは博士後期課程のプログラムですので，修士号を取得しているか，修士号と同等の研究経歴などが必要です。修士論文を執筆していない場合などは，希望指導教員に相談してください。
  • JDPSR is a doctoral program. You need to have obtained a master’s degree or have an equivalent research career. If you have not written a master’s thesis, please consult with your expecting supervisor.

Q.   実は英語に自信がないのですが…  I am not sure about my English ability…

  • 三大学共通で開講される講義やゼミはすべて英語で行われます。また，留学生なども多いプログラムですので，英語で考えを述べ議論できる能力，英語で論文を執筆できる力が必要になります。英語を母語や教育言語としない方には英語資格試験のスコアの提出を求めています。また入学試験の面接は英語で実施されます。この専攻では英語は目的ではなく手段です。流暢でなくとも，言いたいことを伝えられることが重要です。
  • All joint courses under this program are held in English. We have many students from abroad, and you are supposed to think, describe, discuss, and write in English. We ask you to submit a public English test score/certificate if English is not your mother tongue or educational language. Our entrance examination (interview) is also in English. You should not be nervous about fluency, but you need to convey your ideas in English.

Q.    環境のことを教えてもらえますか？ Do you teach us about environmental issues?

  • 2025年春からは新カリキュラムへ移行し，主にD1の学生を対象とした履修科目は，サステイナビリティに関連した特別講義（半期に4～５回）と，チュートリアル形式のリサーチクエスチョンの錬成講座となりました。特別講義はディスカッションとセットになっており，環境，開発，技術，情報，社会など，様々なトピックに基づいています。あくまでも博士後期課程ですので，これらの3大学協働の講座は，それぞれの大学・所属研究室での専門指導と並行して実施されます。一方向の教科書に基づいたような授業はありません。学生の自発的な学びと研究の遂行が求められます。
  • Our program has renewed the curriculum and shifted to a new one in April 2025. The courses jointly provided by the three universities (mainly for D1 students) consist of special lecture series (4 to 5 times a semester) on topics related to sustainability and tutorial sessions to deepen research questions. Each special lecture is paired with a discussion session, and the theme varies from environment, development, technologies, information, and societies. As a doctoral course, these special lectures and tutorials parallel with works and academic instructions under each supervisor. We do not offer a textbook-based teaching. Students are required to study and pursue research proactively.

Q.   学生たちにはどんな人がいますか？ Where are the students from, and what do they do?

  • 英語プログラムであることもあり，留学生が多いのが特色です。アジアやアフリカの国々からの奨学生もいます。同時に，会社勤めや自営の仕事を続けながら研究を続けている社会人や，子供を育てながら研究を続けている学生もいます。
  • As JDPSR is provided in English, we have many foreign students. Some are from Asian and African countries funded by scholarship programs. Also, some are working for companies or self-employed, working while studying. Mothers and fathers are also studying with us.

Q.   希望指導教員はどうやって決めたらいいですか？ How can I choose a principal academic supervisor?

  • 自身の専門分野，研究の方向性に基づいて決めてください。プログラムに所属する教員のリストはこちらから見られます。出願を決める前に，かならずメールなどでコンタクトを取り，相談してみてください。
  • You can choose one based on your own research field. You can browse the list of faculty members for this program here. Please contact the faculty and consult about your research before you decide to apply to our program.

Q.    三大学のプログラムだと，何がいいのでしょう？ What is good about this three-university program?

  • 所属大学・ゼミでの研究・指導に加えて，ほかの2大学からも副指導の教員がつきます。また，主にＤ１学生対象の協働講座の他，3大学共同で開催されるワークショップやミニカンファレンスなど，研究報告や議論の機会が毎学期用意されています。3大学から学生証が発行されるため，3大学の図書館や言語習得支援など，教育リソースを利用することもできます。また，博士課程修了時には3大学から学位修了証（学位記）が授与されます。もちろん，研究仲間も3大学にいます。
  • Besides your principal academic supervisor, you will have two other academic supervisors from two other universities. We also offer joint courses (mainly for D1 students) and workshops/mini-conference each semester to provide students with opportunities to report and discuss their research progress. You will also have three student IDs issued from three universities, allowing you to benefit from three libraries and other academic support (such as basic language classes). When you successfully finish the program, certificates are granted from three universities. And, of course, you have your colleagues in three universities. 

Q.   どこに出願したらいいですか？ Where should I apply?

  • 希望する指導教員が所属する大学へ出願してください。プログラムに所属する教員についてはこちら。また，出願書類に関しては，こちらを参照してください。入試の時期や回数などは，大学によって異なりますので注意してください。
  • Please apply to the university to which your expected principal academic supervisor belongs. You can check the list of faculty members for this program here. The application forms and information about the procedure are provided here. Please note that the application periods are different for each university. 

Q.    授業や指導はいつ行われますか？ How the teaching and supervision are scheduled?

  • 3大学の協働の講座は，主に前期は4月から7月の間，後期は10月から2月の間の土曜日に開講されています（年によって多少の変更があります）。これらの科目は，履修が博士号申請の要件となっており，主にＤ１（1年目）時に履修することになります。所属研究室のゼミや指導については，各教員によって異なります。
  • The courses jointly provided by the three universities are basically held on Saturdays between April and July (for the Spring semester) and between October and February (Fall semester). D1 students are required to take these courses, as they are partial requirements of PhD candidateship under this program. The schedules for each laboratory and seminar vary depending on supervisors.

Q.     授業はどこで行われますか？ Where do I study?

  • 特別講義やチュートリアル，ワークショップなど3大学で実施するものは，学期ごとに3大学が交代で開講しており，農工大（主に東小金井），東京外大（府中・多磨），電通大（調布）で周り番で実施しています。
  • The programs jointly offered by the three universities, such as special lectures, tutorials, and workshops, are hosted each semester by each university by turns. So, each semester, you will visit TUAT (mainly on Koganei campus), TUFS (at Fuchu, Tama), and UEC (at Chofu) in turn.

Q.   「トリプレット」とはどういうことですか？ What do you mean by “triplet”?

  • 一人の学生を三大学の教員3人で指導する仕組みを，トリプレットと呼んでいます。実際には他の大学院プログラムと同様に，主な指導教員のいる大学・ゼミに所属して指導を受けながら研究を行います。他の2大学の副指導教員からも，定期的にコメントをもらうなど，指導を受ける機会があります。また学生によっては，他大学の副指導教員のゼミにも参加することがあります。異なる専門分野の教員からも指導を受けられ，他大学にも研究仲間がいるのが，本プログラムの特色です。
  • Under our program, one student is supervised by three supervisors from different universities, and we call this system “triplet”. Like other doctoral programs, you will belong to one university under the supervision of your principal academic supervisor, but you will also get comments and instructions from other academic supervisors regularly. Some students attend the additional seminars provided by supervisors in other universities. The main feature of this program is that you have supervisors and colleagues in other research fields, both in social science and natural science, at different universities. 

Q.    Sustainability Research とは何ですか？  What is Sustainability Research?

  • Sustainabilityの概念の成立やこのプログラムの成立についてはこちらをご覧ください。今日では，Sustainableであるとは「将来世代の必要を満たすことを妨げることなく，現代世代の必要を満たす」ことができることを指しています。人間の生活，経済活動，社会，文化，自然，地球環境，技術，エネルギー，食糧，資源，介護・医療などあらゆる事柄が関係していますが，そのような複合的な要因を考慮し，関連性を意識し（integrated viewを持ちながら），また長期的な視点を持って自分の専門分野での研究を行うことを，私たちはSustainable Research と表現しています。
  • As for the evolution of the concept of Sustainability and this program, please refer to this page. Today, sustainability is defined as “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” Sustainability is important in every aspect, from human lives, economic activities, societies, cultures, nature, planetary environment, technologies, energy, food, resources, and health care. We call it Sustainable Research when one conducts research in a specialized field considering such complexities and relationships between the issues and keeping an integrated and long-term view.

Q.     オンラインで指導を受けられますか？ Can I study online?

  • パンデミックが収束したことに伴い，現在は基本的に対面での研究教育を行っています。
  • As the global pandemic ended, we now basically educate and research on campus, face-to-face.

Q.    コースワークを受ければ博士号が取れますか？ Can I get PhD if I finish the coursework?

  • いいえ。特別講義やチュートリアル，共同ワークショップでの報告やインターンシップなどの科目が博士号申請の要件となってはいますが，単位を取得すれば博士号が授与されるわけではありません。あくまでも博士後期課程ですので，ほかの博士プログラムと同様に，独自の研究を行い，学会での研究報告や学術雑誌での論文発表をしながら，博士論文を執筆し，博士論文審査に合格する必要があります。
  • No. Although we set them compulsory, attending special lectures and tutorials, reporting at workshops, and finishing an internship do not grant a degree. In this doctoral program, students are supposed to conduct their own research, report at academic conferences, and publish their works in academic journals while completing a doctoral thesis and successfully defending it in the examination, as any doctoral students in other programs do.

Q.    仕事をつづけながら研究をしたいのですが… I want to continue my job career during doctoral study.

  • 本プログラムには、社会人の学生が多くいます。また、本プログラムには，職業を有している等の理由に基づいて，修了までの期間を標準年限よりも延長することを認める長期履修制度があります。詳しい規定や手続きについては，希望指導教員に相談するか，各大学に問い合わせてください。
  • We have many students continuing their job careers. We allow a long-term registration plan (longer than standard educational periods, that is, three years for this program, on permission) that enables working students to extend their studentship. For detailed rules and procedures, please contact your supervisor or applying university.

Q.    修士号を取得して以降の研究の蓄積がすでにあるのですが…  I have research achievements after completing a master’s program.

  • 本プログラムには，きわめて優秀な学生には早期修了（最短2年）を認める制度があります。ただし，2年間で必要修了要件（単位の取得，インターンシップ，国際ジャーナルへの査読付き論文の発表など）を満たし，博士論文を執筆し，審査に合格する必要があります。詳しい規定や手続きについては，希望指導教員に相談するか，各大学に問い合わせてください。
  • We allow an early completion plan for students with remarkable achievements (within two years at minimum). Even in this case, students must meet the obligations (fulfilment of credits, internship, publications to peer-reviewed international journals, etc.) within two years and submit and successfully defend a doctoral thesis. For detailed rules and procedures, please contact your supervisor or applying university.

Q.    修了生のキャリアは？ With PhD, what kind of career path?

  • 本プログラムは2019年に始まり，初めての修了生は2022年に出ています。これまでの修了生は各専門分野のシンクタンクや在外日本大使館の専門調査員の他，日本や出身国の大学教員，日本学術振興会の研究員（ポスドク）などに進んでいます。
  • JDPSR started in 2019, and we awarded the first PhD degree in 2022. Past students now work for a private research institute, the Japanese Embassy overseas, universities in Japan or the country of their origins, and as a Post-doctoral researcher under the JSPS program.
