The 3rd Lecture of Spring Semester 2026: Fruit Cultivation in Japan and the World.

May 09, 2026

The third lecture was held on May 9, 2026, at Koganei Campus of Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology (TUAT)

In the morning session, Prof. Ban (TUAT) gave a lecture entitled “Japanese Fruit Horticulture: Status, Challenges, and Global Implementation,” exploring the history of fruit cultivation in Japan and discussing how climate and temperature influence the growth of fruit trees. The students actively participated in the discussion, giving examples of fruits from their home countries, such as African star apple.

The discussion showed that fruits have different meanings and uses around the world. In Japan, fruits are often given as gifts, whereas in many other countries they are mainly consumed as an important source of nutrition. Some students also mentioned that fruit trees are often planted in home gardens as part of home landscaping, allowing people to enjoy fresh fruits in their everyday lives.

In the afternoon, students gave presentations on their research based on keywords and Research Maps during the interdisciplinary seminar. The topics covered a wide range of subjects, ranging from natural science issues such as factors affecting tree growth and the environmental impact of pharmaceuticals, to social and political topics such as women’s land rights in Mozambique and political stability in Djibouti.

During the class discussion, faculty members provided feedback on each project, focusing on research objectives, originality, and the relation to previous studies. Their comments highlighted the importance of presenting research goals clearly and concisely. The discussion also fostered interdisciplinary exchange, with students actively sharing ideas and constructive suggestions for improving each other’s projects.
